A Return to Sanity

People across the country have become fed up with the sensationalized media coverage, corrupt politicians and smear campaigns which now epitomize the electoral process in the US. And while some may see this as a new phenomenon, the truth of the matter is that this is how politics has been for decades, even centuries. Early campaigns were often as grotesque as the ones seen today, with unfounded allegations of sexually transmitted diseases, children out of wedlock and criminal offences being the norm. But this doesn’t detract from the fact that most of the political discussion in the limelight today has been reduced to talking points and slogans for political bumper stickers.

The truth of the matter is that most Americans don’t fall in the extremes like the most recognized politicians and pundits. Nor are their views clearly divided among the lines of Democrat and Republican. In order for there to be any improvement to our political process, we need to end the environment where a candidate must ascribe to a particular canon of beliefs and engage in rhetorical hyperbole in order to stand a chance in an election. Why can’t a sound political agenda and pragmatic ideas for improvement be bedrock for a campaign?
